Tips on removing your Mo

So it's time to get rid of that furry monster that's been living under your nose for the last month!

It's going to take more than a razor and shaving cream to handle this, however. By using the proper tools and taking the proper precautions, shaving your moustache should be easy, quick and painless.

  • ·Wet your moustache with warm water, and apply a little hair conditioner, which will help to soften the hair if it is particularly coarse or thick. Rinse the hair conditioner thoroughly out of your moustache, and allow it to dry.
  • ·Trim your moustache down to a shorter length, using scissors or an electric beard trimmer. Make sure that the blades of the scissors are sharp to avoid unnecessary and painful tugging motions as you try to cut the hair. Setting the beard trimmer at the closest setting may be the most effective way to ensure a smooth and painless shave.
  • ·Apply shaving cream or gel generously to what's left of your moustache. Try to use a cream or gel that contains moisturizers, such as aloe vera or vitamin E, which will help to soothe the skin after the shave.
  • ·Select the right type of razor when you shave off your moustache, avoiding cheap disposable single-blade designs which can pull and tug and even nick your skin. A multi-bladed razor will remove hair more quickly and easily.
  • ·Shave the remainder of your moustache, moving the razor in the opposite direction to how the hair grows. Apply little or no pressure to your skin as you shave, and be sure to rinse the blades frequently.
  • ·Rinse the area thoroughly when you have finished, making sure to remove all cream or gel and loose hair. Use cold water on the newly shaved area in order to soothe your skin and close your pores, which may help to reduce skin irritation or razor burn.

·Rub a little onto the area a cream that also contains aloe vera or vitamin E will go a long way toward eliminating any itchiness and discomfort you may experience.

BOTOX: Your questions answered part 2

WHAT DOES BOTOX TREATMENT INVOLVE?

BOTOX is a non surgical procedure whereby a small amount of BOTOX is administered into selected facial muscles by a trained medical professional using a very fine needle. Generally, BOTOX treatment takes around 10 minutes. Discomfort is typically minimal and brief, and no anaesthetic is required. The injection may sting for a few seconds but normal activities can be resumed soon after.
After the injection, it takes 2-3 days for the BOTOX treatment to begin taking effect and about 7 days to see the full effect. The dose recommended  for the treatment will vary on your individual situation and the severity of your lines. Your doctor will know what the best dose is for you and which muscles to inject to give you the best results.

HOW LONG DOES BOTOX TREATMENT LAST?
The effect can last up to 4 months before the lines slowly begin to return. If you have repeat BOTOX treatments the effect tends to last longer.

DOES BOTOX CAUSE MORE WRINKLES TO FORM?
BOTOX will relax the facial muscles that cause expression lines. It does not cause more wrinkles to form. If you choose not to have further BOTOX treatments your muscles will eventually return to normal activity and your wrinkles will gradually revert to their pre-treatment levels.

WILL FACIAL EXPRESSION BE AFFECTED BY BOTOX TREATMENT?
BOTOX works specifically on the muscles treated. This means any muscle left untreated should not be affected by the BOTOX treatment.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
In addition to its use for cosmetic reasons, BOTOX treatment is also used to treat patients in a variety of therapeutic indications including cerebral palsy in children, movement disorders (head, neck, shoulder, face) and axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating).
In the amounts used for the treatment of upper facial lines, the side effects are usually temporary and localised to the area of injection. Possible side effects include headaches, pain, burning/stinging, swelling or bruising at the injection site, local muscle weakness including drooping eyelids/eyebrows, skin tightness, tingling sensations, itching/aching forehead, nausea and flu-like symptoms.

HOW LONG HAS BOTOX BEEN USED?
BOTOX treatment has been used in Australia and New Zealand in therapeutic treatments for over 15 years. It was first approved for use in Australia for movement disorders (eye and face) in 1993 and for eye spasms and crossed eyes in New Zealand in 1991.

CAN BOTOX BE COMBINED WITH OTHER PRODUCTS AND PROCEDURES?
Many people use a combination of cosmetic products and/or procedures with BOTOX. Your doctor will advise you as to whether or not you will receive better results if your BOTOX treatment is combined with other products or procedures.

BOTOX: Your questions answered part 1

More and more men are turning to Cosmetic Doctors for rejuvenation techniques, to help their faces reflect freshness and vitality.
One such technique is BOTOX treatment. It can be used to relax the specific facial muscles that cause upper facial lines (crow’s feet, forehead and glabellar frown lines) to form.

HOW AND WHY DO WRINKLES FORM?

Many facial wrinkles occur when we use our muscles to form facial expressions. The wrinkles formed during these expressions are called dynamic wrinkles. For example, when we smile our eye wrinkles become prominent and when we frown the vertical lines between our eyebrows become noticeable.

When we are young our skin springs back to its initial position after facial expression, but as we get older dynamic wrinkles stay on our skin to form static wrinkles; these are the wrinkles and folds that are present at rest. This process occurs because the natural substances such as collagen (the major structural protein in the skin) elastin, (the protein that causes the skin to stretch) and hyaluronic acid (which gives the skin volume) decrease with age. This, together with environmental factors such as exposure to sunlight, smoking and stress all contribute to the creation of wrinkles and folds.
WHAT IS BOTOX TREATMENT?
BOTOX is a natural, purified protein that relaxes wrinkle causing muscles, creating a rejuvenated appearance. The active ingredient in BOTOX is derived from bacteria in much the same way penicillin is derived from mould. It is manufactured in sterile laboratory conditions.
BOTOX is a prescription only medicine and treatment is only available from a qualified medical professional. It is registered for the treatment of crow’s feet  (the lines that radiate from the corner of your eyes when you smile or squint), forehead lines (the horizontal lines that form when you raise your eyebrows) and glabellar frown lines (the vertical lines  that appear between your eyebrows when you frown).

HOW DOES BOTOX TREATMENT WORK?
BOTOX can be used to relax the specific facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles (these are the ones formed during facial expression). Once the muscles are relaxed, you cannot contract them and continue to makes the undesirable facial expressions. Thus, the lines gradually smooth and new lines are prevented from forming.

Redken Easy Tips to Looking Good

Easy Tips to Looking Good - Hair Tips by Redken For Men

Tip 1: Healthy Hair

What does hair and steak have in common? The answer is protein. Hair is comprised mainly of a non-living protein called keratin. As you take on the day, your hair loses essential elements that provide strength and energy. It's important to use a shampoo (and conditioner) that help you to refuel your hair. Redken For Men products offer focused technology for stronger hair and balanced scalp.

Tip 2: The Right Look

  • Explore Your Options: Take control of your look. Technologically advanced, benefit-driven products give you exactly what you need: healthy hair and strong style. No problem. Redken For Men offers a complete range of grooming solutions that meet male-specific needs. Our styling products are categorized by form and control level to simplify selection.
  • Right Amount of Gray: Time moves fast. Take back a few years and look younger. Whether you want to reduce or conceal your gray, Redken For Men has a solution that will help you customize your "camouflage". Learn more about Color Camo
 Tip 3: The Pro's

  • Speak Up: we all want to be heard. Top stylists are interested in what you want, not how they think you should look. Check the web or a fashion magazine for looks you like, and then feel free to bring in a picture of a hairstyle you like. A good rapport with your stylist can only lead to a great haircut for you.
  • Come Prepared: Here are some questions you may want to ask at your next visit to a salon: What type of hair do I have? What products work best for my hair type?

Waxing Q & A

Commonly Asked Waxing Questions

Q.       How often do I have to wax?

A.   Every 4-6 weeks is the general rule. Hair needs to be at least half a centimetre long for the wax to adhere. The more regular the waxing the better, as young hairs come out easier.

Q.  How long before the hair starts to regrow?

A.  Usually between 3-8 weeks. Less hair grows after waxing and the hair is generally finer as well. Eventually some hair never re-grows.

Q.     What does waxing do to the skin?

A.      Dead skin cells are removed during the process leaving the skin quite smooth       afterwards. Waxing causes a slight sting to the skin (Aloe Vera based gels or creams are helpful). Some people find the skin reacts with redness or bumps which disappear after a few hours (slightly longer for sensitive skin).

Q.    Will I get ingrown hairs?

A.   It’s possible. Wax removes the entire hair from the follicle. Your skin naturally     hardens/thickens over the area that was waxed so it’s important to keep the area exfoliated. Use a gentle scrub over the area about 2 days after waxing and then 1-2 times a week until the hair can be seen to be growing above the skin.

Q.    What do I do if I have ingrown hairs?
A.  As above but in addition an exfoliating mitt is helpful along with an ingrown hair lotion. Our favourite is Tend Skin – great for ingrown hairs but also suitable for razor bumps or razor burn.

The Perfect Shave

The Perfect Shave

The shave should be seen as an important morning ritual preparing you for the day. To make sure it is a painless and hassle free routine choosing the correct product makes all the difference.
 Steps:

1.   Use a hot towel to soften whiskers and to open up pores or shave straight out of the shower.

2.   Use a fresh blade to achieve the smoothest glide. A blunt blade is the major cause of irritations. If you suffer from razor rash or severe ingrown hairs, a fresh blade will help prevent cross infections.

3.   For sensitive skin that suffers from razor burn use a shave oil (Vitaman Shave Oil) accompanied by good shave cream or shave gel (Vitaman Shave Creme or Gel). Do not use foams or aerosol creams. They contain alcohol and propellants which irritate the skin. Always use a bristle brush to lift hair from the face and soften the hair shaft. The use of a brush also gives a better lather to ensure the protection between your skin and the blade meaning fewer irritations. Take around 1 minute prepping.

4.   Shave with the grain on the first pass. Let the weight of the blade do the work. Never apply to much pressure, otherwise you promote razor rash.

5.  The secret to the closest shave possible is shaving twice using your fingers to feel for the areas you missed on the first pass. Also apply much lighter pressure and shave across the grain this time (but never AGAINST the grain) Shaving against the grain will result in ingrown hairs. Make sure you a use a little more water on the brush to apply additional lather.

6.   Wash the face with cold water to close the pores.

7.   Finish with a high quality aftershave (Vitaman Aftershave Balm) to clam and soothe the skin. Never spray aftershave fluid or fragrance. They contain alcohol which dries the skin.

8.   For men who suffer from ingrown hairs apply a spot treatment (Tendskin) This product contains salicylic acid which prevents the skin from growing over the pore allowing the hair to grow out naturally.

What is an ingrown hair?

What is an ingrown Hair?

Ingrown hair is a condition where hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin The ingrown hair condition is seen primarily among people having curly hair. It may or may not be accompanied by an infection of the hair follicle or "razor bumps", which vary in size. While ingrown hair most commonly appears in areas where the skin is shaved or waxed (Beard, chest, pubic area), it can appear anywhere.
Anything which causes the hair to be broken off short with a sharp tip can cause ingrown hair. Shaving is the leading cause, followed by waxing and tight clothing. The embedded hair causes a localised inflammation (sometimes painful). Sometimes an ingrown hair occurs without external intervention, when the pore is blocked for various reasons, hair is forced to grow sideways in this case.
Symptoms include rash, itching skin, hair which remains in spite of shaving, and infection and pus collecting under skin. Treatments for ingrown hairs include putting a warm washcloth over the ingrown hair, shaving in a different direction, tweezing, exfoliating  scrubs, or Tend Skin solution www.tendskin.com.au

Prevention

There are a few precautions that can be taken to prevent ingrown hairs including proper shaving techniques and preparation of the skin before shaving.
When shaving, applying the proper amount of lubrication (in the form of shaving cream, gel Urban Male recommends Vitaman shave creme or Gel www.vitaman.com.au) is important to prevent the hair from being forced underneath the surface of the skin. Also the application of too much force with a razor can contribute to hair that is cut shorter than the surrounding dermis.

Treatment

There are many different treatments for ingrown hairs.
  1. They can be removed with tweezers (though this can be painful and might cause infections) or dislodged with a rotatable medical device for ingrown hairs.
  2. Some people who chronically get ingrown hairs use laser treatment or electrolysis to completely prevent hair growth.
  3. Tenskin or similar ingrown hair lotions or creams which bring the ingrown hair to the surface of the skin.
